Exploring New Mexico’s Ancient Ruins and Indigenous Cultures
September 6 – 10, 2011
Jerry Courvoisier, Photographer
Digital SLR Wide Angle and Panoramic Photography.
For more information or to register by phone, call 505.983.1206
Overview
Participants of this digital photography workshop will tour New Mexico’s ancient Pueblo ruins and learn techniques in wide angle and panoramic photography to capture dramatic landscapes.
Artist Statement
Frequently when we look to photograph a scene, the image formed in the mind’s eye is both taller and wider than the camera can capture in a single frame. By extending the range of the scene viewed, we can produce a more expansive, impressive and magnificent image, creating a sense of place that transcends the single frame.
Exploring the spiritual sense of a place in the magnificent landscape and ancient ruins of northern New Mexico, participants will work with the tools and techniques of panoramic photography. Capturing scenes with overlapping image segments will then be seamlessly stitched together into a panoramic images using Adobe Photoshop. High Dynamic Range (HDR) is another aspect of image processing we will experiment with to extend the tonal values reproduced within the scene.
Participants in this weeklong workshop explore the composition and visual characteristics of panoramic imaging using the New Mexico ancient ruins as the theme. Topics include the fundamentals for panoramic exposure, overlapping percentages, distance focusing methods, tripod selection and placement, image composition, and lens choices. We take advantage of visually inspiring locations in and around Abiquiu to create stunning panoramas. Using the Photo merge feature within Photoshop, we explore the range of choices relating to image processing, auto alignment, and auto-blending features—all essential elements of image compositing.
